Fur We Love: Jo Rosenthal

Posted by: Sara Jane Emmons

This post is part of an ongoing series called Fur We Love, where we focus on people's relationship to their hair and the routines they've built around haircare. This week, we talked to Jo Rosenthal, an artist and fashion blogger, about hairy genetics, not conforming to beauty standards, and her grandmother's wig game.

What are some of your haircare and grooming routines for hair allover?

Let it grow! Who cares, I think it's cute and soft and makes you 'YOU.' Being a Jewish woman, I feel like being really hairy is in my genes and so I stopped caring and started using it as an accessory. It also keeps me warm in the winter :P

What hairstyles make you feel the most confident?

I like wearing my hair in a high bun because it reminds me of my days being a ballerina. Lately, I'm loving my rainbow hair because I don't know anyone else who has it. Yet...

What is one trick that always works for you?

Absolutely no hair brushing!

How has your relationship to your hair changed over time?

I feel like I've become less attached to growing it out. It's hair and it grows so if I want to cut it, it'll grow back and so there's nothing to worry about.

What is one hair or grooming style you had to try but are happy to leave behind?

I had red hair in high school and it was the worst mistake of my life. I don't even think it's fully out of my hair years later. lol.

Do you have a memory of a time you didn't feel comfortable with your hair?

One of the loves of my life had cancer while we were dating and so in solidarity I cut my hair really really short and then we broke up and I didn't feel like myself with a long-ish pixie cut because it reminded of a heartbreak. I'm glad it grew out, but I think about cutting my hair short again and how it would be different this time.

Do you have a hair icon or someone in your life you look to for inspiration?

I love looking at old photos of my grandma. She wore a lot of wigs in the 60's and grossly enough we still have them in a box in the basement. I think a giant hairstyle is amazing and I'd love to pull off a full on 60's look like that one day.

What do you love the most about your hair?

I like that everyday I wake up and I don't know what the hair on my head is going to do. I also like how that if I grow my pubes out it's my choice and if someone isn't attracted to that, it's their problem.
