This post is part of an ongoing series called Fur We Love, where we focus on people's relationship to their hair and the routines they've built around haircare. This week, we talked to Kelsey Heinze, a photographer, stylist & buyer with a focus on independent design, about natural shampoo, Beyoncé, and embracing unpredictability.
What are some of your haircare and grooming routines?
My general haircare routine is easy and laid back. I typically wash my hair every few days with natural shampoo and conditioner. I do not use styling or leave-in product post shower. I embrace my hair’s natural voluminous look and even its frizz!
As per styling—my routine changes from day to day. During the week with work, I usually pull my hair back into a tight low bun or pony. It’s so hot in Florida that keeping my hair out of my face is usually the priority. But during the weekend, I literally let my hair down. I love letting my curls go full and free.
What hairstyles make you feel the most confident?
Brushed, down, and big!
What's one trick that has always worked for you?
When you have curls, you never know what your hair is going to do and look like that day. Curls can be unpredictable and fussy. When I have days like this, I just pull my hair back in a tight pony tail and accessorize with a fun scrunchie or clip.
How has your relationship with your hair changed over time?
For years I wouldn't go any where unless my hair was straightened. Most girls I grew up with had pin-straight hair and it was just the style back then! It wasn’t really until college I fully embraced my natural hair.
What's one hairstyle or grooming habit you had to try, but are happy to leave behind?
Straightening my hair.... and going full platinum blonde.
Who's your hair inspiration?
Diana Ross and Beyonce. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve referenced their hair color or style to my hairdresser. So fabulous!
What do you love most about your hair?
My hair is my expression. I love how confident, girly and liberating it feels to have voluminous curly hair.
